Installer guide · wiring the sign to the controller
  1. Know the controller. The client's GLEDOPTO Elite 6D-EXMU (GL-C-619WL) has 6 LED outputs: IO16, IO14, IO13, IO12, IO4, IO2. The sign has exactly 6 data runs, so each run gets its own output. No jumpers, no splicing.
  2. Power first. Letters and neon stay on their own power supplies (the controller is 15 A total, far less than the sign draws). From the controller run only DATA + GND to each run, and tie every PSU ground to the controller ground.
  3. Land the wires on the output terminals, top to bottom:
  4. Enter it in WLED (Config → LED Preferences). Add one output per row, in this order, type WS281x. WLED joins them end to end, so every design lines up.

  5. Neon length. Pixels are 2.17 in apart; cut only on the marks. Hidden pixels stay off and every look skips them.
  6. Lean WLED setup (sign patterns only, nothing else running):
    • LED Preferences: exactly the 6 outputs above · target refresh 30 fps · automatic brightness limiter off · global brightness cap ~200/255 (less heat in the letters, easier on the PSUs).
    • Usermods: AudioReactive off (no mic). Leave every other usermod off.
    • Network: pick one. Ethernet → turn the Wi-Fi AP off after setup. Wi-Fi → set Ethernet type to None. Wi-Fi sleep off.
    • Sync Interfaces: UDP sync send/receive, E1.31 / Art-Net / DDP realtime, Alexa, Hue, IR (pin −1), DMX → all off. MQTT stays off until the remote app goes live.
    • Keep: NTP time (holiday schedules) and the presets. Skip 2D map looks if you want the lightest possible load.
  7. Outdoor box. The controller is rated to 45 °C (113 °F), and a closed box in Houston sun can pass that.
    • Mount it in shade or on the cooler side of the truck; use a vented, gasketed box (louvered vent or breather plug) and keep the power supplies out of the controller's box (they're the heat source).
    • Use a non-metal box if it's on Wi-Fi (metal kills the signal), or run Ethernet.
    • Cable glands on every entry, drip loops below the box, entries on the bottom side only.
    • Keep data runs short; if a run from the box to the sign is over ~15 ft, mount the box closer.
  8. Connect and install presets with the panel below (phone on the truck Wi-Fi).
  9. Run the Wiring Test.
    • Every letter shows its color → done, all designs will line up.
    • Two neighbors swapped colors → that run is on the wrong output, or its direction is reversed (LED Preferences: Reversed).
    • A letter half lit, or the color spills into the next letter → the pixel count for that run is off; count it and tell us the real number.
    • Border chase runs away from the neon's input end. Hide extra rope at the far end if you can.
